Welcome to our help and advice centre designed to answer the majority of questions our customers have about buying and selling gold and silver. If your question is not answered on these pages or you would like additional help, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Fill out the request pack form with your full name, postal address, telephone number, and email address. We will then send you a gold pack, which includes a postage bag and a unique Enquiry number. You can then securely package your unwanted or broken gold and send it to us via your local Post Office.

Selling your unwanted precious metals, gold coins, or gold bars to Hatton Garden Metals is straightforward, transparent, and easy. Simply visit our "Sell Gold" page, enter the weight or details of your gold coins and bars, and you’ll receive an instant valuation. We are one of the few UK gold buyers who guarantee the price you see on screen.

1) Request a gold pack here by entering your details. We will then assess and buy your items.
2) Alternatively, you can package your items yourself and send them to us using Royal Mail’s Special Delivery service, which is fully insured up to £2,500.

If you’re unsure about the weight or carat of your gold bars or coins, don’t worry. Each item is independently tested and weighed to ensure you receive the true value.

We require to see specific identification from our customers to comply with Money Laundering and HMRC regulations.

  • Up to £5000: One form of photographic I.D is necessary such as a Passport, driving license or National Identity card.
  • • Above the value of £5000: Customers need to provide two forms of I.D on orders including photo ID (passport, driving license or national identity card) and a separate proof of address document (bank statement, utility bill etc) dated within the last 3 months.

We understand that some of your items may not be hallmarked or that the stamp might have worn away, making identification challenging. If you're unsure about the carat value or precious metal content, please follow these steps:

1. Weigh all items that fall into this category.
2. List them under the carat you believe they are on our gold form and use the notes section to provide any additional information.

For an approximate weight, we recommend using kitchen scales, as they are often the most accurate and accessible for weighing your gold items.

Once your items arrive, we will test and validate them and inform you of the value we can offer.

Please note that we do not accept Royal Mail Post Office receipts as proof of weight, as their scales are often inaccurate.

The section on the form that states "RETURN NON-GOLD ITEMS" does not refer to stones.

A hallmark is an official mark or series of marks, struck on items made of precious metals. In the UK, a hallmark is made of several elements including: a mark for the type of metal, the makers' mark and the year of making. Hallmarks are an official mark of guaranteed metal content. We pay the same price for hallmarked and un-hallmarked items, subject to testing (for larger quantities a Melt and Assay). Please note, that many items bought outside the UK may be stamped and not hallmarked. This means that the item is not guaranteed to be the carat that the stamp states.

Hallmarks are normally found on the inside of ring shanks and wedding bands, earring posts, chain ends, clasps, tags and jump rings. As well as the traditional, stamped method, also look out for the modern, laser engraved variants of Hallmarks. Hallmarks are measured in parts per 1000 and tell us the purity of the precious metal in an official capacity.

The CGT acronym refers to Capital Gains Tax. CGT is a tax on the profit made when you sell or release the value of an asset - during the time that you have owned them. An asset is considered as something you own which can be released and converted into cash. For instance, when you purchase gold such as bullion or coins from Hatton Garden Metals these items would then be considered as your assets. Although the majority of bullion and coin investors will not meet the Capital Gains Tax threshold on their bullion or coins, it is important to understand CGT and your tax free allowance.

For further information on Capital Gains Tax please visit the HMRC website. Please note it is the responsibility of the individual and not Hatton Garden Metals to declare any tax payable.

All of your investment gold coin and bar purchases are not subject to VAT. This will not apply on silver bullion items; VAT is charged at the rate of 20% when you are purchasing silver as part of your precious metal portfolio.
